Dr. Knightly will trace the history of the Godfrey famliy of Kilcoleman Abbey, Milltown from the 17th century conquest through the period of the Enlightenment, the turmoil of the Famine, the Land War and the War of Independence.
There will also be some references to the Coltsmann family of Flesk Castle, Killarney.
The Godfreys, whose origins lay in the Cromwellian conquest, formed an important part of the Kerry landed gentry. They enjoyed good relations with the Herberts of Muckross and with the Browne family, Earls of Kenmare.
The role of the Godfrey family seat and demense at Milltown will be examined. so too will the Godfrey’s connections with the Coltsmann Family of Flesk Castle, Killarney, nouveau riche arrivistes who made Killarney their home.
