Bread Making by Eileen & Mary - 21st May

The bread making was great. They told us how they made bread in the olden days. The ingredients were flour, salt and buttermilk. A couple of children from my class helped to make the bread.
While we were waiting for the bread to bake they showed us the irons they used and the farmers hobnail boots. They were very heavy. Then they told us that the chicken would hatch their eggs in the dresser.

They then brought us into the bedroom and she told us that the sheets were made out of flour bags. In those days while the mother did her jobs, she would but the baby into a teachest which had a tyre as a rim and the baby would happily watch her from it.

Then they brought us back into the kitchen and showed us how they washed their clothes. They used a bucket and a timber board. What they would do was they would put the dirty clothes and the timber into the bucket and fill the bucket with water. Then they would scrub the dirty clothes off the timber board and then they would be clean.

Now back to the bread. They put homemade butter and jam onto it. It was delicious.

They were very nice to us and we had a great time.
