On
Wednesday, 21st May, third class from Scoil Mhuire agus Naomh Treasa
went to Muckross Farm in Killarney. Tom Collins collected us at
9.30 am, by bus outside the school. We enjoyed the journey but it
was foggy so we could not see much out of the windows. When we arrived,
Vivienne showed us the way to the marquee and we put our bags inside.
First we went to see the thatched house. The woman of the house
explained to us
how they managed in the old days. Most of the work
was done by hand, as there was very little machinery. When the cows
were brought in for milking, they would get their buckets and their
three legged stools, and sit down and milk the cows by hand. Sometimes
after milking they would make butter.
At
the next house we saw a goose hatching, and she had eggs under
her. We could not disturb her in case she would get up off the
eggs. There was a pig with eleven bonhams, there was also some
hens. At the next house we made some butter balls. Everyone got
a chance to make butter balls, we even got a sample to take home.
At
the next house Annie told us how they used to cook, and how they
used to build houses with mud and rushes.
At
the next house we met Jimmy Crowley the musician. He played the
guitar, the mouth organ and the keyboard. Sarah, Aileen, Gary
and Stephen played the tin whistle. Neily showed us how to tackle
a horse. Flash, the horse took a carriage up and down and made
a very loud noise.
David
took a camcorder and made a brilliant video, our class was even
on the internet. We arrived back at the school at 3.10pm, having
had a wonderful day out.
