May
Day – the first day of summer
May Day is traditionally considered to mark the first day of summer.
On this day, it was customary to pick and bring home fresh wild
flowers. In some areas, it was considered lucky to bring whitethorn
or furze into the house, while in other places it was considered
unlucky.
Supernatural beings were believed to be very active on May Day
and special care was taken to protect the dairy produce. An evil-doer
might try to ‘steal the butter’ on May morning, by
removing an item from a neighbour’s house or farm. Water
might be removed from their well or dew from their fields. These
charms would, it was thought, increase the quantity of butter
produced by the evil-doer, but nothing would be produced in the
victim’s churn.
Often the farmer would sprinkle holy water on his growing crops
and fields of pasture. The cattle were now turned out of the byres
onto the fresh grass and the turf-cutting began.

Muckross
Traditional Farms Juvenile Hurling Tournament
Perpetuating the memory of the late Dr. Bill Mangan
R.I.P.
Iománaíocht,
ceoil, sport agus craic. On Sunday 13th June 2010 on
the Muckross Traditional Farms at Muckross House, Killarney,
the Trustees
of Muckross House will host a day that combines hurling, the art of hurley
making, old style methods of farming and farm life, traditional music and lots
of fun for all the family.
The centrepiece for the day will be the inaugural Dr. Bill Mangan Juvenile
Hurling Tournament. South Kerry Hurling Coiste na nÓg are delighted
and honoured to respond to the invitation from the Trustees of Muckross House
to organise an under ten (U 10) hurling tournament to perpetuate the memory
of the late Dr. Bill Mangan, R.I.P.

Dr. Bill, as he was affectionately known, was a Trustee and former Chairman
of the Board of Trustees of Muckross House. In the early 1990’s he spearheaded
the development of the Muckross Traditional Farms, which is now one of the “must
see” visitor attraction sites in the South West of Ireland. www.muckross-house.ie/traditionalfarms
The juvenile hurling tournament will, it is hoped, be a very appropriate way
to honour and remember a true friend of Muckross – who would be delighted
to see the youngsters of Kerry connecting with their heritage on the green
pastures of the Muckross Traditional Farms.
On Sunday 13th June 2010 teams from Dr. Crokes, Firies, Kilgarvan, Rathmore,
Kenmare and Na Gaeil (Tralee) will do sporting battle for the Dr. Bill Mangan
Perpetual Cup – which is being sponsored by the Trustees of Muckross
House.
The tournament will take place on a specially developed field, set in the middle
of the Muckross Traditional Farms, located just a short distance from Muckross
House. This “field of dreams” sits in an idyllic setting, overlooked
by Mangerton and Torc mountains on the one side and looking down on the Lakes
of Killarney on the other, with a view of Shehy, Purple and Tomies mountains
sweeping down to the lakeshore – truly Heavens Reflex!
The children, all under the age of ten years, will continue the art of hurling
in the manner of our ancient warriors; warriors like Cú Chullainn, Fionn
and the Fianna.
The present-day warriors will put on a spectacle over a series of games commencing
at 12.00 Noon. Spectators will also have the opportunity to see how hurleys
are made. Traditional music and other entertainment will be available in a
nearby marquee. As always, the Muckross Traditional Farms will provide a most
interesting insight into how farms were operated in our grandfathers’ time
and how the Bean-a-Tí ran her home.
If you are lucky, you might even happen on a freshly-baked cake of soda bread
dripping with freshly-churned home-made butter! It promises to be a truly great
day for all the family.
As hurling is one of our National sports, this is an ideal opportunity for
both locals and visitors alike to come to Muckross Traditional Farms to see
for themselves this fast, skilful game played by our young warriors within
the grounds Muckross - surely the most magical of surroundings!
Visitors on the day will also gain a better understanding of our proud heritage
and wonderful environment. The emphasis will, of course, be on a Fun Family
Day Out and there will be many attractions and surprises in store. We encourage
all family members to attend this inaugural event. It will make for a great
day – so please make a note of the date in your diaries – Sunday
13th June 2010.
